This technique keeps the jump ring in a circle shape.
Do not pull the jump ring straight apart to open, this changes the shape of the jump ring and then it won’t close properly.
Here is a jump ring that has been opened properly.
To close the jump ring, do the same twisting action in the opposite directions. When the ends are brought together, the ring will still be circular.
