A section of an airport terminal’s roof collapsed Friday in New Delhi amidst heavy monsoon rains. The roof came down on parked automobiles, killing at least one person and injuring eight officials, local authorities said.

The airport suspended operations at the affected terminal, which was Terminal 1, Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu told reporters at an impromptu press conference, and attributed the damage to the storm.

Government critics, however, contend that the collapse was due to poor maintenance and negligence.

“The rest of the terminal building has been closed off and everything is being thoroughly inspected so that any other untoward incident does not happen here,” Kinjarapu said. “Passengers are the first priority for us.”

The closure affected IndiGo and SpiceJet operations. The Delhi airport on Friday said that IndiGo flights will operate from Terminal-2 and 3, whereas SpiceJet flights will operate from T3.

Other sections of the New Delhi are recovering from massive flooding and the storm brought down power lines and halted traffic on many roads.
