The Gulfstream G700 Achieves FAA Type Certification

Summary

  • The G700 from Gulfstream Aerospace was officially certified by the FAA, allowing deliveries to begin – the largest and fastest jet made by Gulfstream.
  • Performance upgrades include shorter take off and landing distances, a longer range of 7,750 nautical miles, and a top speed of Mach 0.935 (717 mph).
  • The G700 has the lowest cabin altitude on the market, twenty panoramic windows, and a cabin length of nearly 57 feet – setting new standards.

On Friday, March 29, Gulfstream Aerospace announced that its brand-new aircraft, the Gulfstream G700, was awarded type certification by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This certification allows Gulfstream to begin deliveries of the new ultra-long-range business jet. The FAA certification also confirmed several new performance improvements compared to what was originally anticipated in early flight testing and development.

Official certification

The FAA certification that was awarded on March 29 officially allows Gulfstream to enter the G700 into service. This aircraft is the largest business jet that Gulfstream has ever made and is also the fastest aircraft it has certified. Gulfstream expects the G800, which is in the development process, to surpass the G700 in terms of speed.

In a statement, the President of Gulfstream, Mark Burns, stated,

“We have successfully completed the most rigorous certification program in company history with the G700. I’d like to thank our world-class team of flight test, certification and engineering professionals, along with the many others at Gulfstream who have contributed to this accomplishment. The G700 brings a new level of performance and cabin comfort to business aviation and is doing so while meeting the highest certification standards our industry has ever seen.”

Gulfstream initially expected the aircraft to be certified in late 2023 and enter service shortly after with its launch customer, Qatar Airways, which ordered ten of the business jets. Because of this, the G700 has already entered steady production and approximately fifty aircraft have already been completed or near completion. With the new FAA certification, the company can begin deliveries. Per Aerotime, Gulfstream expects to deliver 50 G700s in 2024. The company expects to deliver a total of 160 aircraft in 2024, including the G700.

Performance specifications and upgrades

With the new certification, Gulfstream confirmed several new performance increases. The company confirmed its new required take off distance is now 5,995 feet and its required landing distance is 3,150 feet. These are significantly shorter than what was originally anticipated.

Late last year, the company announced several other performance improvements. The G700 reached a maximum range of 7,750 nautical miles (8,919 miles). This was a large improvement from the originally anticipated 7,500 nautical miles (8,630 miles). The new range allowed the G700 to become the business jet with the longest range, surpassing the Bombardier Global 7500 which has a range of 7,500 nautical miles (8,630 miles).

Another improvement the G700 saw during flight testing was a new top speed. The G700 can now reach speeds of Mach 0.935 (717 miles per hour). This makes the G700 the fastest Gulfstream business jet. The standard cruise speed for the G700 is Mach 0.85 (652 miles per hour) to Mach 0.90 (690 miles per hour).

The G700 also has the lowest cabin altitude in the business jet market. It reaches an altitude of only 2,840 feet when flying at 41,000 feet. The business jet also has twenty of the standard Gulfstream panoramic windows and a system that recirculates fresh air within the cabin, which is found in many Gulfstream business jets. The cabin of the G700 is the also longest of any Gulfstream jet, which reaches nearly 57 feet.
