“If you are looking for a tangible, stress-free guide to protect you and your family from everyday environmental toxins, THIS IS IT!”
—Dr. Vivian Chen, MD, founder of Plateful Health and Detox Right

With all the time spent at home in recent years, you probably realize how much the inside of your home contributes to your mental and physical health, for better or worse. But did you know that the Environmental Protection Agency estimates that indoor air is 2–5 times (and occasionally more than 100 times) more polluted than outdoor air?

The good news is that you can control and improve the environment inside your home, and A Healthier Home provides an accessible, room-by-room roadmap for doing just that. Wherever you are on your journey to a healthier home, author and founder of A Little Less Toxic, Shawna Holman, offers realistic steps you can take to maintain a less toxic living environment that aligns with your values. Create a healthy, happy living space with simple swaps and hacks for banning hidden harms in every room:

Outside

No matter what type of home we reside in, I want to emphasize the importance of getting outside of those doors of yours. Fresh air and sunshine can do a world of good for our mood and our bodies. Whether it’s in your own outdoor space, yard, or garden, or a public space, get outside regularly. Daily, if you’re able. Even in freezing weather or on the grayest of days, the sun’s rays are, indeed, illuminating the Earth and that fresh air and sunlight can do so much good for your health and well-being. Even if for just three minutes, it truly makes a difference.

The Bedroom

It’s easy to think of the bedroom as a room where you don’t spend much time. In reality, it is one of the most, if not the most, important areas of the home to focus on. If you include the time spent sleeping, about one-third of your day is spent in this room. You’re not awake, but time is time. If you add it up, you spend about a third of your life in the bedroom. (In fact, if you work outside the home, you likely spend more time in the bedroom than in any other part of your home.)

The Laundry Room

How many things in life can we count on like the laundry? It doesn’t judge you. It doesn’t up and leave when you’ve been less than attentive. It stands by you, no matter how absent you may have been. Day after day, the laundry shows up. Although I do celebrate those eleven seconds of the day when all the laundry is done.

The Kitchen & Food

Have you ever noticed at most events or gatherings in the home, people tend to congregate in the kitchen? This space has become the hub of most homes. It’s not just where food is stored, prepared, and served but it’s also where memories are made and so many conversations are had. In the kitchen, you’ll also find spices, food storage, utensils and cookware, serveware, drinking water, cleaning products, drinking vessels, and more. This space is a zone of great impact. Making this room a healthier place will contribute to a healthier home and a healthier life.
