The Grocery Row Gardens at the Beginning of May

Last week I took a few pictures of the Grocery Row Gardens in the cool of the morning.

They are coming back strong after winter.

It’s been a weird spring. It went from cold to hot quite quickly, and rainfall has been low.

The goji berries are growing like crazy, but they flower incessantly without fruiting. I am not sure why. Maybe they’ll fruit this year.

The potatoes in the Grocery Row Gardens aren’t looking that great so I went ahead and gave all the rows some cottonseed meal to kick them into gear. We’re going to need some rain, though! It’s not the same walking around with a hose.

Today we string trimmed around the edges of the gardens and knocked a lot of the weeds done. I have a ton of yams that need planting and don’t have space to plant them. We may put up more cattle panel trellises in the areas we’re clearing.

Taking care of the nursery and the gardens has been tough. Lots of spinning plates right now. The Grocery Row Gardens will survive without much work, but the yields won’t be as good.

This afternoon we hope to plant lots of peppers and sweet potatoes in the gaps.

You can learn more about Grocery Row Gardening in my little book. Its a beautiful way to grow food.
