Did you ever have Octagons when you were younger? They are octagonal building disks that fit together. I got a set for my 3rd birthday, and I have still have them. They are a fun way to build and have inspired me to make a connecting hearts building activity for Valentine’s Day.

To make your own connecting hearts building activity you will need:
- Cardboard
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Paint (optional)
On your cardboard, I used some cardboard packaging, draw your hearts. If you want them all to be the same size and shape, then draw around a cookie cutter. Then cut them all out.
I didn’t just want blank hearts, so I painted them all different shades of pink/red. But this step is optional. I like to do that sort of thing in the evening while listening to the TV.

The final step is to make slits around the edge of each heart. I made 4 on each one. You don’t want the slits to be too thin, or it will be hard to build with them. On the other hand though, you don’t want them to be too wide, or the hearts wont stay connected.
Our finished set is quite small, which makes it perfect for putting into a small bag and taking out as a busy bag. We’ve also used them in loose parts play. BB made them into airplanes, then feed them bits of pizza.
